RCI Engine Skid Plate – 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma | TACO-05-FRONT
Protect the vulnerable underside of your Tacoma with the RCI Off Road Engine Skid Plate, part #TACO-05-FRONT, designed specifically for the 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma.
Providing substantial coverage for the front of the vehicle, this skid plate protects critical components including the front differential, oil pan, and front cross-members from rocks, ledges, trail debris, and other obstacles encountered both on and off the road.
Available in your choice of 3/16-inch steel or lightweight 1/4-inch aluminum, the RCI Engine Skid Plate provides serious underbody protection while maintaining a smooth, low-profile design that helps the vehicle slide across obstacles rather than becoming hung up on them.

Protect Critical Front-End Components
The underside of a Tacoma contains several components that can be vulnerable when traveling off-road.
The RCI Engine Skid Plate provides coverage for critical areas including the:
-
Front differential
-
Oil pan
-
Front cross-members
Damage to any of these components can quickly turn a trail ride into an expensive repair.
RCI designed this skid plate to create a strong barrier between those components and rocks, ledges, stumps, trail debris, and other obstacles.
Choose Steel or Aluminum
RCI offers the TACO-05-FRONT in two material options, allowing you to choose the protection that best matches your Tacoma and how you use it.
3/16" Steel
The steel version provides excellent strength and impact resistance for Tacoma owners who regularly encounter rocks and demanding terrain.
Steel is an excellent choice for:
-
Rock crawling
-
Technical trails
-
Frequent off-road use
-
Maximum impact protection
1/4" Aluminum
The aluminum version provides substantial underbody protection while reducing weight compared with steel.
Aluminum is an excellent choice for:
-
Overlanding
-
Daily-driven Tacomas
-
Trail use
-
Vehicles where minimizing added weight is a priority
-
Owners wanting corrosion-resistant material
Both versions use RCI's vehicle-specific design and factory mounting locations.
Integrated Oil Filter Access Door
All current RCI Tacoma front skid plates include an oil filter access door.
This is especially useful on 2016-2023 Tacoma models, where access to the oil filter would otherwise make routine maintenance more complicated with a full-coverage skid plate installed.
The access-door design also maintains compatibility with 2005-2015 Tacoma models.
Service Without Removing the Skid Plate
A skid plate shouldn't turn routine maintenance into a major project.
RCI incorporates service openings into the TACO-05-FRONT so routine servicing and oil changes can be performed without removing the entire skid plate.
That means you can leave your underbody protection installed while performing normal vehicle maintenance.
Reinforced for Off-Road Use
RCI reinforces the skid plate between the vehicle's cross-members to increase strength and rigidity.
The design uses center mounting points to help distribute loads effectively whether you choose the steel or aluminum version.
RCI also incorporates a protective differential cage that provides substantial protection while allowing the skid plate to sit close to the underside of the vehicle.
Keeping the skid tucked close to the chassis helps preserve valuable ground clearance.
Bolt Protector Rings
Exposed skid-plate bolts can take considerable abuse on rocky trails.
RCI surrounds exposed mounting hardware with bolt protector rings designed to help shield the bolt heads from direct contact with rocks and other obstacles.
This can make future skid-plate removal and servicing considerably easier than dealing with heavily damaged mounting hardware.
Smooth, Flat Bottom
The underside of the RCI skid plate features a smooth, flat design.
Instead of creating unnecessary edges that can catch on rocks or obstacles, the flat surface helps the Tacoma slide across obstacles.
This is especially valuable when navigating:
-
Rock ledges
-
Deep ruts
-
Uneven terrain
-
Rocky trails
-
Washouts
-
Technical off-road obstacles
Compatible With Differential Drop Kits
RCI specifically designed this skid plate to accommodate Tacoma applications with or without differential drop kits.
This makes it a useful option for lifted Tacomas where a differential drop has been installed to help address front CV axle angles.
Important Lift Compatibility
This skid plate does NOT work with 4-inch or larger drop-bracket suspension lifts.
Large drop-bracket lift systems substantially reposition the factory suspension and differential mounting geometry and can interfere with skid plates designed around the factory chassis configuration.
If your Tacoma uses a 4"+ drop-bracket lift, this skid plate should not be considered compatible.
Direct Bolt-On Installation
The RCI Engine Skid Plate installs using the Tacoma's existing factory attachment points.
No drilling is required.
RCI includes the necessary installation hardware and instructions.
Finish Options
Depending on material selection, RCI offers finish options including a durable black powder coat.
The black powder-coated finish provides:
-
Additional corrosion resistance
-
Durable exterior protection
-
Clean finished appearance
-
Added protection from normal environmental exposure
Excellent for Stock & Modified Tacomas
The TACO-05-FRONT is an excellent upgrade whether your Tacoma is relatively stock or equipped with extensive off-road modifications.
It's particularly useful for vehicles used for:
-
Trail driving
-
Rock crawling
-
Overlanding
-
Camping
-
Hunting
-
Off-road exploration
-
Rough-road travel
-
Daily driving in demanding environments
For Tacoma owners building a complete underbody protection system, the engine skid plate can also serve as an important foundation for additional RCI skid plates and armor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What years does the RCI TACO-05-FRONT skid plate fit?
This skid plate is designed for the 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma, covering both 2nd- and 3rd-generation trucks.
Does this skid plate protect the front differential?
Yes. RCI specifically designed the skid to protect the front differential along with the oil pan and front cross-members.
Should I choose steel or aluminum?
Choose 3/16" steel when maximum impact resistance is the priority. Choose 1/4" aluminum when you want substantial protection with less added weight.
Can I change the oil without removing the skid plate?
Yes. The skid includes service openings and an oil filter access door, allowing routine oil service without removing the complete skid plate.
Does the oil filter access door work on 2016-2023 Tacomas?
Yes. RCI specifically notes that the access door is an important feature for 2016 and newer 3rd-generation Tacomas while maintaining compatibility with 2005-2015 trucks.
Will it work with a differential drop kit?
Yes. RCI designed the skid plate to accommodate vehicles with or without differential drop kits.
Will it fit a Tacoma with a 6-inch lift?
Not if the suspension uses a large drop-bracket lift system. RCI specifically states that the skid plate does not work with 4-inch or larger drop-bracket lifts.
Does installation require drilling?
No. The skid plate bolts directly to existing factory attachment points.
Is installation hardware included?
Yes. RCI includes the required installation hardware and instructions.
Is the skid plate made in the USA?
Yes. RCI manufactures the skid plate in the USA.
Does this fit the 2024 or newer 4th-generation Tacoma?
The current RCI product title and related application information identify this part as a 2005-2023 Tacoma skid plate. Because the 2024+ Tacoma uses a different platform, we do not recommend TACO-05-FRONT for a 4th-generation Tacoma unless RCI specifically confirms compatibility.
